Overwhelming, fascinating, incredible ... these are key words when you come face to face with the largest living organisms in the world: Sequoia! This legendary trees are growing on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada on the west coast of the United States. The highest specimen is measuring almost 84m and the biggest one has a girth of more then 32m.

Forest fires
Sequoias have a thick soft bark that protects the core of the stem against the fire of forest fires. As a result, these trees are able to survive forest fires. By logging at the end of the 19th century is much Sequoiabos disappeared. The wood is very durable but shatter easily and is therefore not suitable as construction timber. The secret of the redwood
What is the secret that sequoia can bes o big and so old? The explanation of this mystery must be sought in the climate. By the evaporation of the adjacent ocean water humid air is supplied which condenses on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada and causes a foggy atmosphere. The Sequoiadendron is able to absorb the water from the condensate drops through the needles, and thus it is not firstly dependent on the water supply via the roots.

Although the Sequoia will grow into a tree, the growth rate is comparable to other common trees. The plant is not very critical with regard to the soil and it actually grows anywhere in the UK

As a young plant Sequoiadendron is susceptible to botrytis, a fungus that attacks the needles. Cut out diseased branches to keep the plant healthy. Once planted, the giant sequoia can not be moved anymore. The tree makes some long roots and if they are removed, he is unable to recover on a new place.
